Jalubana Balisa - Organic dairy at high standards
Jalubana Balisa is one of our NSF funded apprentices, and a year into her time on the farm she details how far she has come in learning about organic dairy farming:
Over the past year, I've had the privilege of interning at Colbourne Farm, a renowned organic dairy producer. During this time, I've gained hands-on experience in various aspects of organic dairy farming, including milking, animal health and pasture management. I have worked closely with the farm team to develop practical skills and knowledge in sustainable farming practices. I am able to drench, give injections (Intravenous /Intramuscular/Intramammary), calf-feed, to start-up and close- off the milking machine.
What I have learnt is that in order to run a successful dairy you need to be able to take risks, be more open to new trends to increase milk yield, be a critical thinker then the rest will fall into place.
I have been so lucky to work under an experienced person, Nondumiso Mlotshwa, and I consider her my teacher. She had been working at Colbourne Farming for more than ten years, and I have learned so much from her.
I won't lie this is the greatest experience I've ever had!
