Minenhle Mkhize - From Future Farmers to Global Agricultural Leadership

Minenhle Mkhize’s career journey began in 2018 through the Future Farmers local placement program, where she gained hands-on experience and mentorship that established her foundation in agriculture. Today, as a hydrogeologist, Minenhle is making a significant impact in sustainable water management and climate resilience, showcasing the power of the Future Farmers program in developing globally minded leaders in agriculture.

 

Mafezi Zikhali caught up with Minenhle for a Q & A that highlights her career pathway, something that many aspiring Future Farmers can benefit from:


1.     Can you share a brief overview of your career journey since completing the Future Farmers program?


After completing the Future Farmers program, I gained clarity on my career direction. The program helped solidify my vision, motivating me to pursue a master’s degree in agrometeorology, where my research focused on projected climate change effects on agricultural systems. Combining this knowledge with the practical experience I gained during the internship, I secured a transformative opportunity to work in high-tech greenhouses in the USA. This role not only expanded my technical expertise but also deepened my understanding of global agricultural practices.

 

2.    What inspired you to pursue a career in agriculture, and how has that focus evolved over time?

 

My passion for agriculture was initially driven by the pressing challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and the need to promote sustainable farming practices. I was inspired by the potential to innovate and contribute to solutions that ensure food security while protecting our planet. Over time, my focus has evolved to address the critical issue of managing scarce, non-renewable resources, particularly water.


This shift led me to pursue a career in hydrogeology, where I work on projects aimed at sustainable water management - a resource increasingly under threat due to climate change. In some regions for instance Florida, USA, the effects of groundwater depletion and land sinking due to sea level rise are stark reminders of the urgent need for action. Through my work, I am committed to ensuring that water resources are managed responsibly to support human consumption, agricultural productivity and environmental resilience in the face of a changing climate.

 

3.    What were the key skills or experiences from the Future Farmers program that have been most beneficial in your career progression?

 

The program equipped me with invaluable skills, particularly teamwork and effective communication. Collaborating with diverse groups taught me how to share ideas and achieve collective goals, a competency that has been instrumental throughout my career.


Additionally, the program’s mentorship aspect stood out as a cornerstone of my development. Having an accessible and experienced mentor was incredibly beneficial not only for my professional growth but also for my mental health. The mentor shared practical insights on workload management, supervision techniques, and leadership strategies. Just as importantly, they offered emotional support, having experienced similar challenges themselves. I could have easily given up but their guidance not only helped me navigate complex situations but also inspired confidence and resilience, equipping me to face future challenges effectively.



4.    What specific skills or knowledge gained through the Future Farmers program have been particularly useful in your role abroad?

 

One of the most impactful skills I gained was the ability to communicate complex agricultural concepts to diverse audiences. This has been particularly useful in an international setting, where bridging knowledge gaps and fostering understanding among multicultural teams are essential.

 

5.    Were there any challenges during your placement that helped you develop resilience or adaptability in your career?

 

Certainly, during my placement, I faced significant challenges, such as working on a farm with limited resources and poorly maintained infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, my passion drove me to innovate, utilising the available tools to ensure the work was completed successfully. This experience taught me resilience and the importance of resourcefulness.

 

6.    How did the Future Farmers program prepare you for leadership roles and responsibilities in a senior position?

 

The Future Farmers program provided me with an invaluable foundation for leadership by putting me in a position where I had to take charge, even in challenging circumstances. As a farm supervisor during my placement, I learned the importance of leading by example, fostering collaboration within a team, and making decisions that ensured productivity.


This experience was a crash course in balancing technical expertise with people management. It taught me how to motivate a team, delegate effectively, and solve problems under pressure. Most importantly, it instilled in me the confidence to take responsibility for outcomes and to continuously seek solutions, regardless of the obstacles.


These lessons have been instrumental in shaping my leadership approach, allowing me to take on senior roles with a focus on empowering others, building cohesive teams, and driving innovation. The ability to adapt, communicate, and remain calm under pressure has become a hallmark of my leadership style, which I credit directly to the program's hands-on learning opportunities. 


7.    How has working in the USA shaped your approach to agriculture or business practices compared to your experiences back home?

 

Working in the USA has profoundly influenced my approach to agriculture and business practices, especially when compared to my experiences back home in South Africa. The USA’s agricultural system is distinguished by its advanced technology, mechanization, and precision farming methods. For example, high-tech greenhouses, automated irrigation systems, and advanced climate control technologies are commonplace, ensuring optimal productivity and efficiency. These practices allow farmers to scale operations with minimal labor while maximizing yields and resource use. However, these systems often require significant financial investment and access to infrastructure, which can be a barrier to entry.


In contrast, South Africa's agricultural practices are more resource-limited and labor-intensive, often relying on traditional methods, particularly in rural areas. While there are pockets of modernised farming, such as in commercial sectors, smallholder and subsistence farmers often face challenges like water scarcity, limited access to advanced tools, and reliance on natural rainfall. This stark difference highlights the need for creative problem-solving and resilience in South Africa’s agricultural sector, as farmers must adapt to environmental challenges with fewer resources.


The experience of working in the USA has taught me the value of integrating technology with traditional practices. For example, while South African agriculture may not have widespread access to high-tech solutions, there is an opportunity to incorporate cost-effective innovations, like drip irrigation or solar-powered pumps, to address issues like water scarcity and energy reliability. Moreover, the USA’s focus on data-driven decision-making and sustainability has inspired me to advocate for similar approaches in South Africa, emphasising the long-term benefits of investing in innovation to improve food security and environmental management.


Ultimately, my time in the USA has broadened my perspective, encouraging me to think about how the lessons from a highly industrialised system can be adapted to meet the unique challenges of South African agriculture. It has reinforced the importance of combining technology with cultural and environmental awareness to create sustainable and scalable agricultural solutions.

 

8.    Have you encountered any significant differences in agricultural practices or approaches between the USA and your home country? How have you adapted to these changes?

 

The agricultural systems in the USA are vastly different from those in my home country, often relying on technologies that are non-existent back home. Adaptation required a willingness to learn continuously, absorbing as much knowledge as possible to bridge these gaps and apply innovative methods effectively.

 

9.    Could you describe a few standout moments or milestones in your career that you’re particularly proud of?

 

Currently, a significant milestone in my career is becoming a hydrogeologist. This role involves studying groundwater systems and ensuring sustainable water resource management. It’s particularly rewarding to contribute to projects aimed at conserving natural resources and mitigating climate change effects, ensuring that agriculture and other industries thrive without compromising environmental health.

 

10. What personal or professional qualities do you believe helped you reach a senior role in an international setting?

 

Work ethic has been a cornerstone of my success. My dedication to continuous learning, adaptability, and a genuine passion for what I do have enabled me to excel in diverse roles, including senior positions in international settings.

 

11. How do you feel your career journey and achievements reflect the broader skills and pathways that Future Farmers participants can aspire to?

 

My journey reflects the vast potential of the Future Farmers program to shape participants into professionals capable of making meaningful contributions on a global scale. The program provides a platform for gaining critical skills, practical experience, and the confidence to tackle complex challenges in agriculture and beyond.

 

12. What are some of your goals moving forward in your career?

 

Looking ahead, my primary goal is to transition into the mining industry back into my home country, using my expertise as a hydrogeologist to address critical water resource challenges. This includes ensuring sustainable water management, minimising environmental impacts, and developing innovative solutions to balance resource extraction with ecological preservation.


In South Africa, the mining sector faces significant challenges, such as water scarcity, acid mine drainage, and environmental degradation. I aim to lead projects that integrate advanced technologies like remote sensing and hydrological modelling to tackle these issues and promote more sustainable practices. Balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship is key, and I am committed to advancing responsible mining policies that protect communities and ecosystems.


Beyond technical contributions, I aspire to mentor young professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and environmental responsibility. My ultimate vision is to help create a mining industry where resource extraction and environmental sustainability coexist, ensuring lasting benefits for both the industry and the planet.

 

13. What advice would you give to current Future Farmers participants looking to develop their careers in agriculture or abroad?


My advice to Future Farmers participants is to fully embrace every opportunity the program offers, from practical hands-on experience to building meaningful connections with mentors and peers. These relationships and experiences can be transformative for your career. Stay curious, ask as many questions as possible, and take every challenge as a chance to grow.

If you have the chance to work abroad, take it - it will expand your perspective, expose you to diverse agricultural practices, and teach you adaptability in new environments. Working in different systems can highlight innovative methods you can bring back home or incorporate into your work.


Lastly, keep your passion for agriculture alive. Whether your focus is on sustainability, food security, or new technologies, stay committed to making a positive difference. The skills and mindset you develop now will set you up for a successful and impactful career in agriculture or any field you pursue.
