Zamazwide Nxumalo, Kwanalu KZN Agricultural Union Intern
As a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture graduate, my goal has always been to gain practical experience in the agricultural industry, utilising my strong scientific research skills and ability to write formal reports. Throughout my academic journey, I built a solid foundation in poultry production and management, health, animal housing and biosecurity, poultry nutrition, and report writing. These experiences have made my internship at Kwanalu through Future Farmers an ideal fit for me, as it allows me to apply my knowledge in policy research, focusing on policies and legislations that support farmers in their agricultural practices. Additionally, Kwanalu offers guidance to small-scale farmers, particularly in livestock care, where I also contribute my knowledge.
One of the most memorable experiences so far was attending the Kwanalu Annual Congress, where I had the opportunity to interact with fellow agriculturalists. It was truly inspiring to learn about the critical role Kwanalu plays in supporting farmers, especially small-scale farmers, and the impact of their work in the industry.
In addition to my policy intern role, I’ve also been fortunate to be involved with the WYRE team, which empowers youth in agriculture by offering training and mentorship to help them grow their businesses. The WYRE desk has hosted four workshops since my arrival, and I’ve gained valuable insights on important topics like stock theft and branding.
Looking back on my journey, I am incredibly grateful for the chance to intern at Kwanalu and for the valuable learning experiences I've had, including the recent exposure through Future Farmers. I’m excited to continue learning and growing in the remaining months of my internship.
