My journey with Future Farmers: Growing in the Dairy Industry
I'm Philiswa Mbotho from uMzimkulu, originally from Driefontein location. I studied Farming Management at Esayidi TVET college uMzimkulu cumpus, and I have experience in both crop and animal (dairy farming). I'd like to share my journey with you.
In June 2024, I began an exciting chapter of my life through the Future Farmers program, starting my internship at Green Farming Trust Dairy Farm. When I first arrived, I knew almost nothing about dairy farming, but I had always admired dairy cows whenever I passed by farms. This opportunity gave me the chance to turn that interest into real experience.
At Green Farming Trust, I was involved in calf rearing, taking care of calves from newborn stage until they grew into cows. I also learned important aspects of dairy management—although I was not yet milking. My work included treating sick cows and calves, drying off cows, participating in steam-ups, and record-keeping (such as noting calves’ gender, birth date, and mother’s details). Another big step for me was learning to drive a tractor. Before my internship, I had no driving experience at all, but I gained confidence and skills along the way.
By the end of July 2025, I moved to Sandwater Farm in the Eastern Cape, another dairy farm where I am currently continuing my internship. Here, I finally got the chance to be hands-on with milking cows, which makes me very happy because it completes my dairy experience. Alongside milking, I continue to handle farm records and treating sick cows.
Since arriving at Sandwater Farm on 14 August, I have already taken part in valuable training sessions. One of the first trainings was on heat spotting, where I learned how to identify the signs of cows in heat—an essential skill for breeding management. Just recently, on 3 September, we also collected milk samples from every cow in the dairy herd, which was a great practical learning experience.
Looking back, I feel truly grateful for the knowledge and growth I’ve gained so far through Future Farmers. From knowing nothing about dairy farming to now being able to care for calves, treat sick cows, drive a tractor, and even milk cows myself, this journey has been life-changing. I am excited to continue learning and building a career in dairy farming.
