Thobeka Mkhwanazi - Producing crops while building her future

Thobeka Mkhwanazi is thriving in crop production on a National Skills Fund apprenticeship, and Future Farmers caught up with her from her placement at Shallowdrift Farm to see how she is doing:

I am currently undertaking my internship in crop farming at Shallowdrift Farm. This opportunity has given me valuable practical exposure to the agricultural sector, allowing me to put into practice the knowledge I have gained in a real working environment. The journey has not only deepened my understanding of crop production but has also strengthened my commitment to contributing meaningfully to sustainable farming practices. I am truly grateful for this experience, as it continues to shape my professional growth and future aspirations in agriculture.

My apprenticeship journey at Shallowdrift Farm has been both insightful and transformative. Being in the field has allowed me to practically apply the theoretical knowledge I have acquired, while also exposing me to new methods and challenges that are unique to farming. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that farming requires patience, dedication, and resilience, as the outcomes are often influenced by factors beyond our control, such as weather conditions. I have also come to appreciate the value of proper planning, time management, and teamwork in ensuring successful crop production.

Most importantly, this experience has taught me to value sustainability and innovation in agriculture, as they are essential for long-term food security. Overall, my apprenticeship at Shallowdrift Farm has not only strengthened my professional skills but has also inspired me to play an active role in shaping the future of farming.
